Our lab focus on the basis of pathogenic mechanisms that lead to an assortment of neurodegenerative disorders, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease (HD). Patients suffer from these diseases are essentially no cure to date, and our mission is to understand the molecular and physiological basis of these diseases. While most of neurodegenerative disorders have no clear genetic link, some inherited pathogenic alleles have been identified, which provided an invaluable genetic access to reveal the molecular mechanisms of diseases. Our strategy is to utilize identified genetic factors to develop disease models in fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and apply both genetic, biochemical, and proteomic approaches to uncover the molecular basis for the diseases. Fly models offer a genetic platform that could help us to piece together molecular and cellular pathways that involve in those devastating disorders. Currently, we aim to uncover the pathogenic mechanism of a multisystem disorder, IBMPFD, and tauopathy. We are also developing molecular tools, including fluorescent probes that would permit in vivo evaluation of functional integrity of different cellular mechanisms. Ultimately, our goal is to identify potential targets for therapeutic approach.
