Mechanism

In the presence of excess tryptophan, trp repressor binds tryptophan, and the repressor-tryptophan complex binds to the operator trpO, which lies within the promoter. When bound to trpO, the repressor-tryptophan complex prevents RNA polymerase from binding to the promoter.
