SNARE (soluble NSF-attachment protein (SNAP) receptors; NSF is N-ethylmaleimide sensitive fusion protein) mediates a set of membrane fusion function. When the neurotransmitter packed in vesicles is secreted to fuse with synaptic membrane, it requires the SNARE complex and thereby releasing neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft. SNAREs include the plasma-membrane-associated protein syntaxin and the vesicular protein synaptobrevin and SNAP-25 (synaptosome-associated protein of relative molecular mass 25K).
