and
indicators
will give you an impression of how long it takes
the Explorer to complete various tasks on your computer. However, this mechanism is
not foolproof. If you rush ahead, clicking on links or buttons before the Explorer has
finished the previous task, it is possible to induce problems such as
a permanent busy condition. If this happens, just close the window
and start over -- but operate the Explorer at a more relaxed pace.
The Comparator has no "Ready/Busy" indicators but uses the same internal mechanism. It is recommended that you use the one-molecule flavor of the Explorer enough to get a feel for how fast things work before you use the Comparator.
The simplest method for building a linear presentation with Chime is explained in detail in , where a downloadable template is provided.
It is also possible to save the scripts with the PE. After you have obtained the desired image, use Chime's menu: Edit, Copy Chime Script. This copies the script into the clipboard. Now paste the script from the clipboard into a text editor (Windows: Wordpad; Macintosh: Word), and save it to a filename ending in .spt. Be sure to save it as plain MS-DOS/ASCII text.
There are some advantages to saving scripts with Chime instead of with RasMol. These are described in Shortening Scripts Saved from RasMol or Chime.
Scripts saved from either RasMol or Chime are often unnecessarily long and slow to execute, although they produce the desired image. It is fairly simple to shorten these scripts dramatically.
(Chime-generated scripts will run in RasMol as well as Chime. They contain a few commands not recognized by RasMol, but these simply generate harmless error messages in RasMol.)
