Gas gangrene

Gangrene is the term for the death of tissue (necrosis). There are several potential causes, including interruption of the blood supply, infection with certain bacteria and damage from freezing.

Bacteria such as Clostridia which infect wounds may release enzymes that destroy tissue. Such bacteria usually produce gas in the tissue and lead to gas gangrene.

Two types:
     * Dry gangrene - without bacterial infection.
 * Wet gangrene - with bacterial infection.
Gas gangrene is a form of wet gangrene.
