* Keeping mRNA in a linear form--an essential initiation of translation in prokaryotes.

* The normal increase in CSP levels that follows cold shock could therefore be important for compensating for the higher stability of secondary structures in RNA at low temperature. Preventing formation of intramolecular H-bons in mRNA.
